I included that last part about Homecoming, because this has to have been the most PACKED stands I've seen in a non-championship game at a smaller school stadium. Though I arrived at 5:50, we didn't get to find a parking space until 6:45 pm. I parked our car about 1/4 mile away from the front gate at a nearby school...and much to my surprise, fans were parking along with me, and it was not a lonely walk to the gates! Talk about school spirit at homecoming!
I arrived a bit late for a pre-game word and prayer, so I just took to the field with the players and coaches, and watched the JV team handily beat the Kailua team, 28 - 6.
The first half of the game was an awesome display of determination; back and forth the teams pushed, into scoring position, but then denied in one form or another; going-on-fourth-down was the norm rather than punting. Our offense was getting held back by Kailua's tenacious defense, and our players were visibly frustrated. Kailua had a passing game that charged forward, only to be stalled in Farrington territory. With minutes of the first half of the game left, FHS responded with a fumble recovery and our DB taking off with full afterburners, for the half's only score.
At halftime, the coaches quickly regrouped the players, and they returned in the second half with the goal to get out and have fun playing ball again. I was going to talk to them about being "distracted"; by the packed stands, by the bands playing, by girls screaming, by everything except what they came to do; play great football. Coach Randall encouraged them well, and we discussed the same things as we took to the field once more.
Long story short, Farrington's Governor football team returned to their "groove", and the football was typical FHS brand football; in other words, awesome! Incredible evening (game ended at 10:30pm!), and a fitting Homecoming for the many FHS alumni who attended. Props to Kailua for playing their hearts out too. They also play good ball.
Prayed with and encouraged many players tonight. Especially for some friends on both offensive and defensive lines. Strong and agile, setting up for some amazing plays. Good job FHS!
Prayer list add-ons! Malo Torres (linebackers coach), Al Torco (D-line coach), Robbie Hong (RBs coach), Carl Liana (QB coach), James Passi (O-line coach), Resti Pagurigan (Special teams and RBs coach), Gery Graham (DBs coach), Mark Tom (equipment mgr). More to come as I keep praying for this wonderful football team.
FINAL SCORE: Farrington 25, Kailua 0. TYJ!
