It was an evening to remember in Farrington's OIA 2011 Quarterfinal football opener against the Mililani Trojans. A light drizzle began to fall as the Junior Varsity team wrapped up their quarterfinal in a come-from-behind victory over Campbell, preserving their postseason play for another week and sending the Saber team home with a well-fought season ender.
Our boys and gal suited up for battle, and I shared with them a simple encouragement about the value of discipline, how at first it seems to be uncomfortable and unreasonable, but in the end, those who submit to it will reap fruits of righteousness; not just in football, but in life! I praised them for training like hungry lions wanting to go hunting...it was a long two week wait with a "bye", and these folks wanted to play ball! Off we went to war!
Then the rain fell.... a LOT of rain fell.
The first half was all Mililani; they have one of the best quarterbacks in the state and the air attack was taking a "small kine" toll on our normally fierce defense. I don't know about football, but I do know that it was sometimes frustrating to watch our team play so passionately, yet the strategies of the opponent seem to just have their "luck of the draw". We went to lockers at halftime behind, 20 to 6.
I had asked my wife to drop off some jackets during halftime, so I didn't get to go lockers with the team. I got our jackets (and towels too; love you Kay!) and the second half started out with a fresh new Governor team ready to rock it. Each touchdown was hard fought, our most excellent offensive team drove the ball downfield, and the most impressive thing about FHS is how there are no "superstars" in particular. This entire team are superstars in their right. No one is "better" than any other. These coaches make it perfectly clear that it's a TEAM EFFORT, the men and lady cheer "GOD IS GOOD, ALL THE TIME, ONE TEAM, ONE FAMILY"...the "G" unit is truly ONE.
The rain cleared up some, and in yet another nail-biter that reinforced everyone's faith, we prayed in a long line, these football players and faith and God and the gridiron all in one moment in time. The one yard touchdown trot, unopposed, with seconds left on the clock. Tyler expressed it when I watched the clip from the replay; simply tapping his heart, making a "cross sign" on his chest, and pointing and looking up skyward. God is good. All the time.
FINAL SCORE: FHS 25, Mililani 20. Thank you Trojans for an awesome game of football. Next stop for our lions; ALOHA STADIUM, where I just found out we will be playing the Campbell Sabers in semifinal play. THANK YOU JESUS!!!
